How NDIS meal funding works in Melbourne
Meal delivery is one of the most misunderstood parts of an NDIS plan. Here is what is actually funded, what you pay, and how the invoicing works, in plain English for participants, families and support coordinators.
The NDIS funds the cooking, not the groceries
This is the whole idea in one line. The NDIS does not buy your food. What it can fund, where your plan includes it, is the preparation and delivery of meals, because that is the part a disability makes harder. The ingredients stay your cost.
In practice that splits every meal into two parts. You pay the ingredient share. Your plan pays the preparation and delivery share. With us that split is 30% you, 70% your plan, and your share is GST-free.
What that looks like in dollars
Our funded meals are $18 for a main and $14 for a salad. So a participant pays:
- $5.40 for a main meal, GST-free
- $4.20 for a salad, GST-free
- Nothing for delivery. The $10 delivery fee goes on the invoice to your plan
The rest, plus GST and delivery, is invoiced to your plan manager. A week of ten mains costs a participant $54, with the remaining $126 plus GST and delivery invoiced to the plan.
Who can use it
We work with plan-managed and self-managed participants. Plan-managed means your plan manager receives our invoice and pays it from your funding. Self-managed means the invoice comes to you and you claim it.
If your plan is agency-managed (NDIA-managed), we can't bill the NDIA directly, so you would order at our normal retail prices instead.
The line item, for coordinators and plan managers
Meals are invoiced under 01_023_0120_1_1, meal preparation and delivery, which sits in Core Supports. Every invoice we send shows the participant's name, the delivery date, the meal preparation line and the delivery line, with GST applied on top, due 14 days after delivery.
What Support at Home changed
For older Australians, Support at Home replaced Home Care Packages on 1 November 2025. The meal arrangement is the same shape: the program can subsidise the preparation and delivery, the ingredient portion stays with the client, and we invoice the provider directly. If someone had meals under a Home Care Package, that support continues under Support at Home.
How it works with us, start to finish
- A support coordinator can request two free sample meals for a client, or you can skip straight to signing up.
- You create an account and enter your plan manager or provider details.
- We email them a confirmation link so they can check the details. Nothing is billed until they confirm.
- Once confirmed, your funded pricing switches on and you order for Monday delivery, ordering by 7pm Thursday.
- You pay your share by card. Your plan manager gets the invoice for the rest.
Common questions
Does the NDIS pay for meal delivery?
It can. Where a plan includes meal preparation and delivery under Core Supports, the NDIS funds the preparation and delivery portion of each meal. Participants pay the ingredient portion themselves, which with us is 30% of the meal price, GST-free.
Can I use NDIS funding for Uber Eats or a supermarket shop?
No. Everyday groceries and general takeaway aren't funded. What can be funded is the preparation and delivery component of meals from a provider set up to invoice under meal preparation and delivery.
Do I need a referral or a doctor's letter?
Not to order from us. Whether meal delivery is funded is set by your plan, so your plan manager or support coordinator is the person who can confirm it before your first order.
What if my plan is agency-managed?
We work with plan-managed and self-managed participants. If your plan is agency-managed (NDIA-managed), we aren't able to bill the NDIA directly, so meals would be at our normal retail prices.
How does the plan manager get invoiced?
Automatically. When you order, you pay your share by card and we send your plan manager a tax invoice for the rest plus delivery, under line item 01_023_0120_1_1, due 14 days after delivery. You don't claim anything back or handle paperwork.
Does Support at Home work the same way?
Yes. Support at Home replaced Home Care Packages in November 2025 and can subsidise meal preparation and delivery the same way. You pay your share and we invoice your provider.
A note on allergens, because it matters when you're choosing for someone else: our meals are made in one kitchen that handles many allergens, and we can't guarantee any meal is free of a particular allergen or make substitutions. Every meal page lists full ingredients and a nutrition panel. If someone has a severe allergy, our meals aren't the right fit.
This guide explains how we invoice and what we charge. It isn't financial or plan advice, and what your particular plan funds is a question for your plan manager, support coordinator or the NDIA.
